Saw Possession last night at Cinefamily.
It was as fucked up as anticipated. An unsettling mix of elements reminiscent of Cronenberg, von Trier and Kubrick, with lots of fun Catholic imagery thrown in for good measure, plus a happily crazed and very In-The-Mouth-Of-Madness-Sam-Neill.
It’s about divorce and satanic monsters, written right after the director (Andrzej Zulawski) returned home from shooting a film in another country to find his wife was leaving him. Apparently much of the dialogue is taken directly from conversations he had with his wife during their divorce. I can only hope that he didn’t find her doing what Sam Neill finds Isabelle Adjani doing at the end of the film.
It’s bizarre and has plenty of problems, but it’s also pretty amazing.
The trailer above is the one Cinefamily cut, which is really fun and shows off the visual nicely, but the original trailer gives a much better idea of the tone.
